Description :

The project Creating cards, Connecting Community organised by the Townshippers’ Association, was intended for English-speaking autonomous seniors in the greater Richmond area, as well as seniors living in the Wales Home CHSLD residence. It was also made in collaboration with Grade 3 and 4 students from St. Francis Elementary School. Its intended purposes were to build strong, positive relationships between students and local seniors so that they could remain actively engaged with the younger generation and also provide them with a sense of belonging in the community. It also helped develop students’ empathy, citizenship skills, and artistic expression. The project was scheduled for November 12, December 3, February 11, and 25. More were planned for March, April and May.

During the activity, students joined local seniors to create cards of well-wishes to share. Each visit had a different card-making theme and different arts and crafting techniques were explored to give seniors and students an opportunity to exchange creative ideas. Seniors also helped students compose messages in the cards. Completed cards were sent to local seniors residences and to soldiers fighting on the front lines in Ukraine to provide them with some well needed comfort and joy.
